In this video I share my 7 top tips for hiking around the Capital Ring Walk.
However many days you do this 78 mile adventure over, here are some tips to suit everyone.
TIP 1: PLAN YOUR ROUTE
Even though the route is well signposted, there are some points where it’s not clear where to go.
Have the route downloaded to your phone ahead of the walk.
DOWNLOAD THE ROUTE HERE.
TIP 2: THERE’S NO RUSH
If I was to do the route again I would decrease the number of miles I walked per day.
There were so many beautiful green spaces I walked though (over 40 throughout the whole trip) but because I had a fairly large distance to cover each day, I wasn’t able to stop and enjoy my surroundings.
TIP 3: START EARLY(ish)
Start early before it gets busy.
It also means you get to your destination quicker and aren’t left rushing at the end of the day,.
TIP 4: PLAN YOUR TOUR STOPS
Plan where you are going to stop for food, water and toilet breaks.
There are parts of the route which passes through many parks, meaning there are no cafes or shops.
Ideally have a plan ahead of time so you are not caught short.
And when you see somewhere, even if you don’t need it, stock up.
TIP 5: FOLLOW THE ROUTE
Some of the route weaves through parks and takes you a long way round.
It’s tempting to want to cut across and miss some of the path, but stick to it where you can as it takes you through gorgeous forests and to the top of viewpoints.
TIP 6: WEAR CORRECT FOOTWEAR
Even though this is an urban adventure, much of the hike is through woodlands, on uneven ground.
I wore trainers that had a thin sole which made my feet ache by the end.
Consider trainers or boots with a decent tread.
TIP 7: AVOID MUSIC OR PODCASTS
Someone asked me if I listen to music or podcasts on my multi-day hikes. The answer is no.
Despite this adventure being in London, take in the sights and the sounds of all of it.
There’s good parts and not-so-good parts but that’s what it’s all about 😀
